Aloha owners, Where do you start when packing for a vacation? The pile of “can’t forgets” is growing but it’s too soon to bring out the suitcases. Not to mention, the holidays are here! Hi my name is Doris Petro.  My husband Andy and I have been owners at the Sands of Kahana for more than 15 years. Together, we have planned many trips to SOK and have learned, through experience, some great tips to keep in mind when your vacation countdown clock starts ticking. Here are our top five things to remember:

  1. Clean out your refrigerator and throw away anything that’s perishable.
  2. Take out the trash and water the plants.
  3. Remember to pack any prescriptions and medications.
  4. Stop your mail and newspaper.
  5. Don’t forget sunglasses and sunscreen (anything larger than 3 ounces should be in your checked baggage).

We hope you find these tips useful when you plan your next trip!  As for my husband and I, we’re counting the days until our next vacation.   Our trip routine starts at Land At Kahului where we pick up our rental car and then we’re off to find lunch.  Next we’ll be eating fish and chips and thinking of our Costco list. There may also be time to briefly hit the mall before heading across the island to check into SOK.

Also, don’t forget that in 2011 the use of plastic bags in Maui County will be banned. So be sure to pack your reusable shopping bags from home! Although I may wait and buy some while on vacation because it’s fun to see the looks ‘island bags’ get on the mainland.

Always remember that if you forget to pack something the staff at SOK will be there to help you with anything you may need. So, don’t stress…after all you’re on vacation! In the meantime, if you’d like to know why my husband and I decided to trade in stress for relaxation by becoming Sands of Kahana owners, view our video at www.storiesfromthesands.com.

Here’s to a Healthy and Happy New Year!
