Hawaii is regarded as the birthplace of surfing, so if you’ve ever thought about giving it a shot on one of your visits to Sands of Kahana, there’s no better place to try the “sport of kings.” Lessons typically last 1-2 hours and are taught by experienced surfers in gentle surf breaks off of Maui’s famous beaches. With a push from your instructor you’re almost guaranteed to get on your feet and catch your first wave.

On the sunny northwestern side of Maui, surf schools in Lahaina will get you started and steer you away from the reef. Puamana Beach Country Park provides easy waves for beginning and intermediate surfers. Launiupoko State Park, just south of Lahaina, offers easy reef waves perfect for beginners. Further south of Lahaina, the beaches of Kihei also feature smaller waves perfect for your first ride.
